Engineering

Engineering is about the application of science to the real world. Classically, civil engineers dealt with buildings, bridges and infrastructure like dams and tunnels, mechanical engineers designed machines and electrical engineers designed circuits and devices. Meanwhile, aeronautical engineers designed planes and chemical engineers designed factories to make products.

But the boundaries are very fuzzy - for example fluid mechanics, which is the study of how air or water flows, is important in civil engineering hydraulics, where the liquid is water flowing relatively slowly, as well as in aerospace engineering where the air flow over the wing is faster.

Many students go onto work in the Engineering sector and may specialise in a particular field such as working as a electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, civil engineer or software engineer. You might have a career in manufacturing, construction, wholesale trade or IT. Studying an Engineering degree will provide you with the prerequisite knowledge for professional registration as an Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer.

Studying Maths is essential, with many universities requiring or preferring Physics as well. Alternatively universities may accept other science-related subjects such as Computing, Maths or Product Design.
